Durham Dales Mining Society & Firestone

I was recently passed a "Treasure Trove" containing amongst it's googies a few editions of the "FIRESTONE An Occasional Publication" published by the Durham Dales Mining Society. I'm curious - does anyone know what became of both the publication, the society and it's archives? They had a few explorations and surveys of various mines around Teesdale & I've a few bits that suggest it ran until at least 1994.

TIA

Nick

Yes, I wrote and published the latter editions (from my office in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia) up to around 1997.
I'm pretty sure I've some copies in a box in the attic, which would of course need digitising.
DDMS faded away in the early 2000's, aging membership, then Foot & Mouth kind of killed it off.
Some of the late Tony Fretwell's collection of mining books has been surfacing recently, am I right in thinking this was the source?
Most of my plans (Teesdale, Arkengarthdale, Nent) have been passed onto an eminent B-P contributor who has a penchant for digitally re-doing old plans

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the update & info, & it wasn't Tony Fretwell's collection. I was wondering if anyone was still around from it & who to contact if needing any clarification on info such as articles/plans etc.

F&M was such a killer for a lot of things, not just stock :(

Pete - I'd welcome a browse of any scanned editions you have.

Mark, I'm happy to scan the few editions I've been passed is it OK to pass copies to Pete and/or interested others if they don't have copies?

Cheers

I'd be OK with scanned copies being distributed to interested parties on request, but I would request that on-line copies be available only on NMCS website, and in both instances any personal info be omitted or redacted.

If I ever find my box of issues I'll pass them onto NMCS where they can be properly archived.

Another source may well be Friends of Killhope. Tony kept everything, and lot of his stuff went there.

No worries, will do as you ask. And if Pete hasn't got the one's I've been given then I'll pass them on to him, or to Friends of Killhope via Ian.
