I recently came across this graphic by Marcin Ciura showing the most common European surnames that have their origins as a specific type of occupation.
According to Wikipedia, Gruber is a German surname from Austria and Bavaria, referring to a person from a geological depression, mine, or pit. Did anyone know this?

According to the German language Wikipedia page, Gruber is an occupation name in grapevine-growing regions for someone who digs pits for vine shoots. Take your pick ...

I found this which discusses both possibilities but finds both theories rather unconvincing.
