Old Timer

I stirred up a hornets nest on AN over this topic after the Carbis Bay Crew had put up a video on YouTube with an exploration of South Terras. As a classified radiation worker my entire working life, I thought I was being helpful pointing out the hazards...others thought not.

For those who may be interested in exploring South Terras, the following article might be of interest:

It might make you change your mind :) .
You will know of the level at King's Wood near Buckfastleigh with a good deposit of pitchblende therein {?}. My eldest lad went to find it last year but fortunately was defeated by the undergrowth, thank goodness !!!

That is the other locality written about in Gillmore et al's paper. I would guess Wheals Edward and Trenwith would also figure quite highly as places to avoid due to high levels of radon.

Good to have you here Dickie, another great thing you did was the photographing of the 25" Barmaster's maps and subsequently making those images available - with the originals now missing, those images are invaluable!
In regards to your comment about the Barmasters maps, Jim R asked me to copy them, which I did on the firm's Barcro camera system (on rails!) and I made prints from the results. He then asked me to send the original whole plate negs to Trevor Ford. Bugger that for a game of skittles I thought, so I made duplicates - not as good - and kept the originals!! So, should anyone require the best possible result they can always email me and I will put them on to the file transfer system (Smash) and send them the link to download same. But, hey! not too many please !!

Welcome - just saw your picture of Halkyn Deep Level from 1989 - the entrance didn't look much different when I was last there in about 2019, 30 years later !

The quality really shows when compared to some of the prints of other Barmasters map photos I found in Nellie Kirkham's collection and scanned at high resolution - they're blurred and hard to read in places, whereas on yours faint pencilled notes can be read when you zoom in!
