Sharnberry Knocking Stones

the area they're meant to be in...View attachment 803

I've had a wander through the heather bit (and a section to my left too), but didn[t manage to fall over/off, or twist my foot on, anything 😟

We did manage to not get chased away by the 10 or so grumbling greylag geese though 🤣

Talk about “needle in a haystack” !! 😳. Good luck though 👍😉

This is a view of a Knocking stone platform with a small bunker alongside in 2017. Westernhopeburn in Weardale. Key features are large flat stones, where the ore was crushed by hand. At many sites, the large flat stones have often been robbed later. Here they have survived in situ - likely because this is a remote site without an access track. IMGP9092 copy.jpeg

You need a bit of moor burning to clear the vegetation off!

They were up mowing to the west of High Sharnberry earlier this spring, so I doubt there'll be any burns there.

Still do see some burns, but nowhere near as many -more and more estates are moving to mowing these days. Not too sure how good it is for the moor as,iirc, the burns help reduce the Heather Beetle populations (the beetle strip & kill heather & a section killed off by them isn't pretty).
