Strontian mines

I just wondered whether I could pick the Scottish contingents brains.

I've been doing some research into the mines around Strontian, namely bellesgrove, whitesmith and fee Donald. I have information about surface workings, but not much of what is underground.

Are the mines worth a visit or are there others in the area (and maybe closer to fort William) that are more accessible.... Sorry a North wales mine explorer that doesn't venture this far north often.

Are you a member of NMRs

I didn't find anything of interest while I was up there apart from a drainage level which can been seen at the side of the road here.

As far as I know, the main site at Strontian is still in use as a quarry, so underground access there (if there still is any) wouldn't be advised. There isn't much underground currently accessible at the 'outlying' sites .

How about looking at Tyndrum? I'd buy the NMRS books in the British Mining Series, No 99 The Lead Mines of Tyndrum & No 105 The Lead Mines of Strontian.

Yes, having looked at Tyndrum that may be a better place to head to. Thank you

I enjoyed my trip round Strontian, but it was a long time ago and I don't remember much about it. I'd need to rake through old pictures to see what it was like inside. There were some nice big stopes in it.
