Update: AditNow

Yes, at some point I hope to get the ME database. I can't say though how much work will be needed to go through it and sort it out into a suitable / useble format.

Chris.

Deeply saddened to hear that the AN backend is now lost, like ME before it. Losing the forum posts from people like Sougher and Twitch who are no longer with us is a blow, and I'm not sure I still have a copy of the trip report I posted after the infamous Middleton Mine trip with Brakeman...
Somewhere on my system is a lengthy post by Sougher which I copied and pasted into a Word document. Its finding it. I believe that there are others. I have nearly 34 Gigs of stuff saved under the title "General Mining". This is downloaded documents (mainly from AN) and stuff obtained from the late Simon Hughes plus some old photos. All the photos that I have taken, and they are not bad quality, is in a separate folder "Mining Photographs".

Its funny, but when AN was running and Simon and I were on the same page, I thought it wise to save anything worth saving onto my system.

For the technically minded, its what is normally called a "Small Office" system, but set up my own "outside of the normal box" way. There are several desktop PCs all networked together on the 169.254 IP block, plus one of them with 2 network cards, LAN as described, and the Internet 192.168. 'Never the twain shall meet'. LOL I use Microsoft Office Outlook as email client, and this is set to convert all incoming and outgoing to plain text. My storage runs to Terrabytes.

I will be working on the relevant files over the coming weeks to burn everyhting except anyhting personal to DVDs for the benefit of this site.

Sad news indeed. But I wonder how many people Adit Now and Mine Explorer have brought to the hobby? Simply discovering that there were like minded people doing what I did, and contributing trip descriptions, surveys, photos etc has become one of the most important and rewarding parts of my life. I'd like to massively thank Simon, Miles and others for their immense efforts in showing the way.

It's certainly sad news, it was a fantastic resource, I used to take part in the photo competition and still have my prize (2nd I think it was) photo on display. I used to buy the calendars every year and I even managed to attend a few AN organised underground trips. Sadly I never managed to get to the Christmas dinner. Not to mention many visits to sites that I wouldn't have been aware of were it not for the ability to search on AN. A great deal of thanks are definitely due to Simon for all his work.

Time to move forward though and this Forum definitely seems on the right track!

I always bought the calendars too, given how hard it is otherwise to get high-quality, full colour pics at a large size of our favourite sites. I'm also really glad I bought the "Reflections" book too back in the day, and I'm wearing one of my old AN t-shirts right now in remembrance!

And they're not digging new mines either 😢

(with notable exception of that insanely huge tunneling project over at Boulby)

Times change, things change, and ................people change
That's a conspiracy by historians to try to guarantee their jobs

all I can say is a large data base will return .

To make that happen though we will need all of your inputs .

If you have “photos” PDFs “ historical images “ locations & names we will want them !

I believe miles still has this data and will be sending it over to us .

Chris jc has been speaking with him regarding this .
That would be brilliant, to have the old ME data too. Miles said he was safely storing it pending updating his software but running GB has taken all of his spare time to do the work.

Yes, Miles is a very very busy chap, but we'll work together to transport over what we can at some point.

Chris.

Yup, I managed a few trips, used to enjoy the Victorian miners trips - dressed in Victorian miner's outfits and candles for light. Big pots of cawl and stewed tea in yr caban. Got most of the AN calendars and enjoyed the Christmas dinners. There's still a few Thursday Nighters around doing things (the core crew of AN. Hope to get out with them again this year.

I did the Alderley Edge costume trip, where I discovered that having a candle in a lump of clay on your hat spills wax everywhere unless you move very carefully - had bits of wax all over myself and my dog by the end of the day. Once the DB is up and running and photos can be attached to mines I might see if Ed Coghlan will upload the photos he took on that trip.

@AR. Yes, agree re copyright. I think we'll have to have a copyright declaration when we implement a document upload page. And any bulk documents that come our way, we'll have to contact the copyright owner for agreement to host unless there is a licensing statement permitting sharing.
Robin, have you got Graham Isherwood's epic tome and diagrams about Oakeley from the old AN site? If not and if Graham is agreeable, I downloaded it to my PC to study shortly before AN died so could send the files over.
Regards, Clive

Hi Clive,

I beleive Roy has archived the AN documents. We've still to review these (for copyright etc.) as the database project is taking all the spare time at the moment. It wouldn't do any harm to get a copy in any case, so I've PMed you my email address.

Thanks,

Robin

I believe this collection is only “none registered user” anything you had to be a “registered user or higher “ we don’t have ,

To the best of my knowledge.

NAMHO awaits a call to help us understand how we can support BP, with time and money etc

Pete, Current NAMHO Chair.
Hello Peter, thanks for your kind offer of help. I have submitted a funding request to Roger, however at this point in time it is advised as provisional as we dont have complete costings. I am therfore looking at agreement in principle.
Whats the date set for next Council and AGM, I did make a note last time, but.....
