Not an exhaustive list but a few that might prove useful, especially to people new to looking at their family history.
The commercial sites give access to many scanned documents such as census returns, directories, parish registers, newspapers etc. These documents are usually available as individual page scans as well as searchable transcriptions.

New to Genealogy, first steps - A well written wiki for those new to family history research

Cyndi's List - A huge curated list of genealogy resource links
FreeBMD - Free access to a limited set of the basic GRO indices of Births, Marriages and Deaths
FreeCEN - This project aims to provide a free-to-view, online, searchable database of UK census returns.
FreeREG - The aim of FreeREG is to provide free internet searches of baptism, marriage, and burial records.
GENUKI - A virtual reference library of genealogical information of particular relevance to the UK and Ireland.
Lost Cousins - A family history website able to match you with others researching the same UK ancestors.
Rootschat - Huge bulletin board where people aim to help each other with research
Rootsweb - The oldest free online community genealogy research website. Extensive surname based sections
UKBMD - Links to websites that offer on-line transcriptions of UK births, marriages, deaths and censuses. Many county area examples have significantly more detail than the basic GRO Indices

There are numerous ways to store family history information both online and offline. A mixture of both si best for data security BUT be certain that whatever you use is fully GEDCOM compliant. GEDCOM is a standard textual format for tree information. It allows easy transfer between most genealogy software. Unfortunately some software which claims to be GEDCOM compliant is not being entirely truthful (eg. Rootsmagic is very popular, particularly in America, but currently uses an old version of the GEDCOM standard, not even fully supporting that on export, - which means data loss will occur on export to a GEDCOM file).

Suggestions for inclusion, corrections and comments are welcomed by PM to any of the moderating team.
