An area of mining rather than a single mine.
This site, resembling Puzzle Wood but more dramatic and free to access, is reputed to be the remains of an opencast Roman iron mine. Today it presents as a rugged area of gruffy ground, approximately 400 by 200 yards in size and up to 30 feet deep in places. There are signs of ancient stone walling, adding to the archaeological interest. At the western end lies a short mine or cave extending about 20 feet into the rock. Other openings have been observed in the area, but they remain unexcavated and their full extent is unknown.
