Red sandstone quarry. Significant feature to the North of the public footpath is a quarrymans shelter cut into the sandstone face just to the right of the stream (stream only present in the winter when the main quarried areas to the South of the path overflow). The quarried area consists of two main sections with the Eastern one flooded all year (level drops in the summer so there is access). The Western section floods in winter. No underground workings and the only significant feature of the quarry activity is the small shelter.

Worked around 1810 to provide stone for the rebuilding of Oughtrington Hall.
1837 Enclosure Act records the quarry as part of the Trafford Estate.
Re-opened around 1871 during the construction of St Peter’s Church, Oughtrington.
Some work in the early 1900s

Open. Public footpath through the centre of the woodland and permissive access to the North side of this. Southern side has no access agreements but is mostly unfenced and the woodland not used for shooting for many years.
