The earliest documented mention of the ancient mines in Silver Gill, Caldbeck, dates back to an order issued by Edward III in 1331 regarding Robert de Barton, who was appointed as the keeper of a mine of silver and lead in the areas of Minerdale and Silverbeck, County Cumberland (now Cumbria). This historical reference is quoted by Raistrick and Jennings in 1965.
The Silver Gill vein is characterized by being a quartz vein bearing lead, zinc, and copper mineralization. It is believed that the mineralization dates back to the early Carboniferous period.
