Smith (1921) records a whim shaft to the south-southeast of Saithaelwyd Cottage, which may correspond to the shaft located in woodland at SJ 1674 7656. The area was worked by the Holway West and Holway District Mines, with shafts extending southward toward the Grange Quarries.
A second shaft remains visible on the edge of the woodland and old mine workings at SJ 1677 7650. While historical records suggest the presence of a whim shaft at SJ 1674 7656, there is no contemporary evidence to confirm its function.
