A series of early workings were established on the Ashgillhead and Ashgillhead North Veins at the Firestone Sill horizon. Subsequently, the London Lead Co. conducted underground operations in this area. In 1950, Anglo-Austral Mines Ltd. explored the site for fluorspar, followed by further exploration in the 1970s by EXSUD Ltd.
