Purbeck used to have substantial underground stone mines (quarrs) accessed via shafts as well as surface quarries. This museum records them found in the immediate vicinity and to the west, as well as noting some evidence of solutional caves…

Somewhere near Langton Matravers, a stone mine was still accessible in 2009 - see CSS nl 52 ref.
