About 20 yards from [Easton’s Mine] is a valuable chalybeate (mineral water or spring impregnated with iron salts) spring.’ In his ‘Notes and References’, Hawkins writes of the spring that it is ‘moderately impregnated, very pure, and grateful to the taste. In combination with the advantages of marine-air and water, sea-bathing, the fisheries, etc., this spring I consider as inestimable, and that it will one day be the means of drawing to the vicinity a great resource of wealthy invalids, and others, and make the neighbourhood of Hope and Salcombe rich and prosperous.’
