Series of levels and shafts in Punchard Gill on the southwestern side of Arkengarthdale, somewhat distant from the main mining area. The veins worked included Cocker, Shakes, Routh, Punchard Gill, Fox Holes, and Wharton’s String. The grid reference given is for the portal of Punchard Level. Other workings include Cocker Low and High Shafts on the western slope of the valley, hushes on the Wharton String north of these, and the Routh Level at NY96110442. It’s important not to confuse this with Punchard Coal Level at the far western end of Great Punchard Gill.
