Quarried areas extend nearly 2km along the ‘Slate Brecks’ (‘breaks’ in modern usage) from Cracken Edge to Whiterakes. These vary from small excavations to very large open areas with stacked deads making walls towards some. Remains of some simple buildings, an old wagonway and later exit incline with drum house can be seen.

Sandstone flag quarries worked extensively in the mid to late 1800s and then again briefly around 1920 to 1929. Mainly surface working but several underground sections.
