Several adits of various sizes can be seen on both sides of the valley. Those on the West side are trials (in some cases probably not for Manganese). The East side, where the public footpath is has some short trials as well as the more significant workings. The tramway adit is wet but provides access to the flooded incline to lower works, a large stoped area, and access to the opencast can be seen (though not easily reached from this direction). Another break in the valleyside gives more direct and dry access to the large stoped area. An adit leads to the top of the opencast and to short blinds.
Buildsings in the valley predate the working here (see above) and comprise a locomotive shed, incline house, office and weighbridge. All are ruinous.
Open quarried area is shown as ‘Old quarry’ on 1st Series Ordnance Survey maps so out of use at that time. In 1902 Fred Hall commenced working at Nant but possibly trial works only as work halted soon after. In 1904 the mine was re-opened and this begins the major part of it’s working life, which continued to 1920 when abandonment was documented. In truth this wasn’t quite the end as there was sporadic small working until 1928. Use was made of the already commissioned facilities which the company had built for sea transport of their ore from Benalt and Rhiw mines. All ore went to Brymbo in North Wales.
Lower levels of the mine had to be pumped so became flooded after operations closed. During 1942 the Ministry of Supply had the mine drained so it could be inspected for remaining deposits as Manganese was in short supply and relying on imports. Insufficient workable ore was found for the mine to re-open and in 1943 the temporary pump was removed and the lower workings allowed to flood.
