This entry serves as a general entry for Llanrwst Mine, and the marker does not represent any particular feature.
This was a large and prominent mine marked by an engine house chimney. Situated at Bwlch yr Haiarn. Three lodes were worked; the N-S Red and Ffridd Lodes, and the ENE-WSW Principal Lode.
There are a number of capped and locked shafts none of which are currently accessible. Most prominent is Endean’s Engine Shaft next to the old engine house. On a hillock to the south east is the capped Doctor’s Shaft. Just across the forest track to the east is the gated Shallow Adit and the capped Air Shaft. The capped Footway and Diagonal shafts are in the grounds of the Outdoor Centre. To the right of the road to the north, and just opposite the Vale of Conwy Level 2 adit is the gated Llanrwst Deep Adit. The adit is in an area of extensive surface workings, all overgrown, dangerous and fenced off.
To summarise the shafts:
Name | Depth | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Footway | 20m | Original sinking (?), Ladder access. |
Diagonal | 75m | Main pumping shaft prior to Endean. |
Doctor | 40m | |
Endeans | 75m | Main pumping shaft by 1870s |
Air | 25m | Ventilation |
New | Internal pumping shaft |
Underground, both the New Shaft (an underground pumping shaft offset from Endean’s) and the Diagonal Shaft were intercepted by the Parc Mine Number 2 level, through which Llanrwst ore was to be extracted, but in the event was never utilised.
It is still possible to access some of Llanrwst from Parc No 2, via the New Shaft, although this may have deteriorated. See C. Cowdery link.
Year | Activity |
---|---|
1853-1864 | After sporadic workings over almost a century where the Ffridd Lode outcropped in Gwydyr Nant, a more focused effort at mining was made by a group of Liverpool businessmen. Their immediate aim was to drive below old workings where good ore was expected. Ten tons of ore were raised during this period. |
1864-1872 | 230 tons were raised over the period. The mine was abandoned by the company. |
1873 | Taken over by the Llanrwst Lead Mining Company. This was very much a company driven by J.P. Endean, although his primary interest was the £43,000 in £2 shares in the mine that he was paid as a vendor. At the time of his death in 1879, these shares were being traded at £4. Robert Knapp served as Mine Captain. The workforce increased from a handful to around one hundred by 1880. |
1878 | 300 tons of ore were weighed. A report was published in the Mining Journal detailing mining operations and estimates of reserves. |
1880 | Due to various factors—including low metal prices, poor ore at depth, liabilities, and the death of Endean—the company was wound up. |
1881 | Taken over by the Caernarvonshire Great Consols Lead Mining Company. After a share subscription and paying off liabilities, the company had only £4,000 in working capital. |
1884 | Workers were laid off. The mine was placed on care and maintenance. |
1905 | Leased by Charles Holmes. |
1919 | Leased by the Western Development Syndicate. |
1920 | The WDS was absorbed by the Eagle Lead Company. |
1929 | In the hands of a receiver. |
1930 | Acquired by D.W. (Dawson Ware) Holdings. |
1950s | Parc Level 2 workings on the Principal Lode intersected the Diagonal Shaft, where the rising main was found to still be in situ. |
Although leased, none of the 20th-century companies re-opened Llanrwst.
Most shafts, all of which all are capped and locked, are in grounds of Outdoor Centre and access is not permitted. However a public footpath can be used to view some of the shafts.
The Deep Adit is next to a public footpath, is gated (probably locked) and reaches a run in area (1997) not far from the entrance.
