The Pallaflat Mining Company began operations in 1874, with its first shaft, No.1, becoming operational a decade later. By 1888, the company had produced 83,412 tons of iron ore. Over time, two additional pits were opened, but the mine ultimately closed in 1914. The iron ore was found in vein-like formations along fault lines and as flat deposits within specific limestone layers. Additionally, traces of manganese ore were discovered. Notably, the mine was renowned for its high-quality calcite crystals, characterized by clear, transparent nail-head and scalenohedral shapes, often exhibiting ‘Butterfly’ twins. Some crystals featured a distinctive coating of hematite, coloring one side in red or brown hues. Baryte specimens were also prevalent, showcasing combinations of pastel green crystals alongside calcite. In the 1980s, local collectors excavated the mine’s dumps, unearthing numerous exceptional specimens.
