Used West Caradon shaft-1855 own ?? Small copper mine is situated in the valley west of Caradon Hill and south of Minions, flanked by West Caradon Mine to the west and South Caradon Mine to the east, with South Wheal Phoenix to the north. The mine’s workings are focused on a ridge separating two streams that converge to form the River Seaton. It contains three east-west-trending copper lodes: Sara’s Lode, Taylor’s Lode, and Gilpin’s Lode, disrupted by north-south-trending crosscourses. Two shafts, Hingston’s Shaft and Sara’s Shaft, are sunk on these crosscourses. While the lode was developed from both shafts, their workings do not connect at all levels. Crosscuts along the crosscourses did not reveal further lodes to the north but connected to lodes in the southern part of the sett. Gilpin’s Lode extends into the Gonamena sett, where it was extensively developed. The mine produced 9,985 tons of 6.5% copper ore and 10 tons of black tin between 1848 and 1872. The deposit consists of tourmalinized and chloritized granite in a matrix of sandy debris. Hingston’s Shaft is marked by a large dump, a stack, and traces of an engine house.
