This was used by Wheal Jane as an emergency egress up until the mine closed.
At the shaft there was a platform and a ladder leading down to a deck at the deep adit station about 40 feet below. This led into some very shallow dipping stopes heading upwards almost to surface.

Carrying on would take you through a ventilation door and into Top Shaft, which was upcast and vented warm moist air out of that section of the mine.

In cold weather you could see the plume of steamy looking vapour rising into the sky.
Passing Top Shaft led to a small decline down to what would be Wh Jane 2 level.
The manway is certaily 18th century and the coffin shape is typical. The timbered section was installed by Wheal Jane when they cleared the adit in the latter half of the 1960’s.

The stone lined section was constructed when the Redruth and Chasewater railway was being built. Excavating for the track bed would have cut into the roof of the adit and so it was lowered from the coffin style to, to a lower profile with a stone lining giving it strength to stand the loads travelling over it.

There is also a shallow adit system below the ground in the area outside the portal.

Whilst on CRoW land, the mine is owned by the Tregothnan Estate who request that people stay well away from all mine workings, which are well signed and generally gated.
