There are a number of mines and workings in the cliffs between Graystone Rock and Bolberry Down. The name “Hope Cove” is likely to be modern, and it is not clear which of the mines it refers to, but the original mine is likely to be Ralph’s Hole.
Halfway between Greystone Rock and Bolberry Down, just within the parish boundary, are two excavations into the southern cliff face. The first is known as Ralph’s Hole and, according to Abraham Hawkins in Kingsbridge and Salcombe 1819, is a cavern about 20ft long, 6 or 7ft broad and 8ft high, near the top of the cliffs, with the sea some 400ft below.
