The pit, now long since filled in, was located on the high ground of Clearwell Meend, between the Coleford–Bream and Coleford–Clearwell roads. The mine operated from 1846 to 1900 and produced around 62,000 tons of iron ore. Later, between 1909 and 1916, an additional 3,000 tons were extracted from a drift on the east side of the Clearwell road.
The underground workings were extensive. The deep levels were connected with those of New Dunn and Old Sling Pit, forming a continuous system. Meanwhile, the outcrop workings formed a complex network of passages that linked with Old Bow and other nearby mines.
