Alum (Auminium sulphate [?] or crystallysed with ammonium sulphate) Works at Hurlet near Paisley started by Charles Mackintosh 1797. Alum made by combining Alum shale (containing pyrites and shale oil) burnt with potassium carbonate (from brushwood, kelp or Potassium chloride (salt boiled with potash to form soda)).
Coordinates are for a site N of Hurlet Hill. No evidence of Shale mining but area is littered with coal and ironstone mines. Alum works located NW of Hurlet crossroads along Nitshill Road (NS517609).
