Two drift mines located about 50 yards apart, both developed around 1910 to access the Yorkley and High Delf coal seams. These drift mines were initially established to produce coal that would help finance the sinking of the main shafts at Cannop Colliery and to supply coal for the boilers used in that sinking process. After Cannop Colliery closed in 1960, the mining license for the Yorkley seam was acquired by Mr. Harvey Gwilliam, who utilized the original Cannop Drift as a secondary exit. The primary drift, known as New Cannop Drift Mine, continued operations until it was mothballed in 1992.
