Driven around 1890, the London Lead Co. conducted a trial driven due to the discovery of a large piece of float galena with exceptionally high silver content in the headwaters of Harwood Beck. Despite their efforts, no mineralized ground was found. However, during the excavation, the level crossed the Teesdale Fault and reached the Whin Sill dolerite.
