North Hooe Mine, situated on the Devon side of the River Tamar, lies directly west of Whitsam Farm. It operated alongside Wheal Hancock, although the Engine Shaft of the latter is positioned on the Cornwall side of the Tamar, more than 400 meters north of the North Hooe workings. Another shaft, referred to as Cowards Shaft on mine plans, is approximately 180 meters south-southwest of the Engine Shaft. Unfortunately, the locations of both of these shafts are no longer discernible. While the mine plans don’t specify any levels from the shafts, it’s probable that it functioned as little more than a trial operation. Although administratively associated with a Devon-based mine, Wheal Hancock is geographically located in Cornwall, southeast of Bohetherick in the civil parish of St. Dominic.
