Situated on the eastern bank of the River Tamar below Bedford United Mine and originally named Luscombe Mine, this operation exploited four distinct lodes: Main, Middle, South, and Gunnislake Caunter, with Main lode also referred to as Luscombe Lode. A pioneering steam engine, purportedly the first in Devon, was installed here in 1803.
In 1841, the mine was absorbed into the Bedford United set, but due to its considerable distance from the main operations, it couldn’t be effectively worked. Consequently, in 1850, it became part of a new set called East Gunnislake and South Bedford Mine. Over the period from 1854 to 1871, the mine yielded approximately 5300 tons of copper ore, along with lesser quantities of pyrite and tin.
