Pit workings.***

Multiple buildings survive at the site, including dressing sheds, a workshop or office, and a mill with adjacent launder pillars. The mill structure contains a slot alignment, indicating that mill power was used or intended to be used for pit haulage. The south side shows the tunnel exit, with remains suggesting some slate was taken out this way and that the mill may have been intended for relocation to this area. Shelters from the last phase of small-scale working remain visible within the pit. Additional structures include a possible barracks and a fine manager’s house, complete with an underground food store and traces of a cultivated garden. The access road is in good condition except near the quarry, with the lower section later serving the Diffwys metal mine.Retry

The quarry was worked as a series of shallow pits over a long period, each opened successively as extraction progressed. It produced slate of good colour that was difficult to split but yielded a tough, flexible product when successful. Operations were initially entirely hand-dressed, but were later upgraded with a water-powered mill and eventually water-powered haulage. An incomplete tunnel project attempted to avoid up-haulage and was intended to access or exit the workings more efficiently. The later years saw small-scale reworking, with shelters from these final operations still present in the pit.
