The Allen family of St Ives operated an old tin mine around 1730, which came to be known by their name. It saw brief activity again in 1828 as Wheal Folly before resuming operations more substantially in 1860. Today, only remnants like overgrown dumps and the engine house stack remain visible in a field northeast of Folly farm, situated north of the St Ives-St Just road.
