Part of Cunning United. Boscean Mine is located 800 meters northwest of St. Just, situated on the western side of the Nancherrow or Kenidjack Valley. In close proximity, about 200 meters to the east, lies Wheal Drea, while within a 500-meter radius are Wheal Owles, Wheal Boys, Goldings Mine, and Wheal Cunning. Between 1852 and 1872, Boscean Mine, inclusive of Goldings Mine, operated and later merged into Wheal Cunning United in 1873. The mine primarily exploited lodes named Pool, Rowe’s, South, and Great Boscean, with shafts such as Brown’s, Coulson’s, and New. Notably, the lodes at Boscean Mine run north to south, a deviation from the typical northwest to southeast alignment. It’s worth mentioning that these lodes extend beneath the Botallack Sett as well. Although mentioned by John Norden in 1584, little is known about the mine until the mid-nineteenth century, when historians noted its significant scale, boasting over seven steam engines in operation.
