Location in CaMoA is SH 4790 9140, but I’ve chosen to place it at the location of the Shaft on the modern OS Leisure Map.
Mine adjacent to, and across the road from Rhos Mynach Mine. See MJ entry above.
MJ 1858 p 68 refers to reports of Capt Williams and of the purser.
“The proceedings of the year were highly satisfactory. A large quantity of mining ground had been opened up .. highly satisfactory - nominal capital of £2500 in 2500 shares, 10 s[hillings] had already been subscribed. Similar to Mona and Parys Mountains. [this is intended to imply that this is also a very profitable mine!] … 120 acres, adjoining Rhosmonarch [sic] [mine]. Duncan’s shaft… a little distance north of the water shaft… at a depth of 14 yards we caught the lode … about 3 feet thick … full of copper .. [etc] lode stretches to Parys [!]. Rothwell’s Shaft - Capt Vivian examined … recommended the south level [adit?] Roose’s Shaft - copper 3 to 4 feet wide [!] [very flattering account]”. p101 “Capt Williams reports they are vigorously prosecuting the level from Duncan’s shaft, to intersect the lode which was cut about 14 yards from surface, and dipped off at an angle of 1 in 3, the shaft being continued vertically, and consequently, leaving the lode, which the drift is to re-cross at the deep level. The water is increasing, although the weather is perfectly dry; they are fast approaching the lode again. This is deemed highly satisfactory, especially as
Capt Williams’ long experience in Cornwall, and his known probity, assure the proprietors that he will not give them more favourable hopes than he can fully justify: and the office he fills in connection with the Great Mona Mines, in the vicinity of these works, are a guarantee for his fidelity. We are glad to see attention paid to the district, which has laid so long neglected, notwithstanding the conviction of experienced men that the whole locality is rich in copper and other ores.”
