The pit was excavated through layers of Drybrook Sandstone and Whitehead Limestone until reaching the Crease Limestone at a depth of 180 feet. Workings extended about 100 yards northwest of the pit and approximately 300 yards southeast along the strike. Additionally, they extended southwards towards Scowles, where they connected with another shaft located 300 yards directly south of the main one. The pit was filled in as recently as 1973.

The mine remained open until as late as 1973, when the main shaft was finally filled in.

The shaft was sunk through layers of Drybrook Sandstone and Whitehead Limestone, reaching the Crease Limestone at a depth of 180 feet. Underground workings extended roughly 100 yards northwest of the shaft, around 300 yards southeast along the geological strike, and continued southwards toward Scowles, ultimately linking with another nearby shaft.
