A 40-foot deep shaft, originally constructed in 1885 to drain the High Delf Coal Mine, was accidentally uncovered in late 1992 by a JCB. The shaft leads to a heavily silted adit, which had been forgotten over time. Its rediscovery highlighted the extent of historic underground drainage infrastructure in the area.
