The earliest quarries were small pits along the North Eastern edge of the woodland. A horse tramway was used to take the corves to Oughtibridge Silica Fire Brick Works.
Imn the early 1900s a second line of quarries were in operation lower down the hillside and connected by a spur off the original tramway. Around 1915 the older quarries were out of use and the original tramway removed. The new spur was extended to Beeley Wood Quarry.
RoWs follow the route of the original tramway and the whole length of the spur.
