Hamlet situated to the east of Bigrigg. The Woodend Mine, one of the earliest significant iron mines in Cumbria, operated from around 1840 until its closure at the end of 1931. While pyrite on calcite can be found at Woodend, it is relatively uncommon compared to other iron mines in the region.
