The main shaft was sunk in 1740 to reach the Churchway High Delf vein, which was about 4½ feet high, at a depth of 336 feet. Later, mining focused on the thinner Rocky seam, approximately 2 feet thick. Mining operations ceased around 1869, but the shaft continued to be used as a pumping station until 1896 to help drain nearby collieries including Bowson, Nelson, and Crump Meadow.ennett 1860-1865
