The pit, approximately 120 feet deep, allowed access to an area of two or three acres in the Crease Limestone, where mining operations were active from 1865 to 1873. During this period, about 13,000 tons of iron ore were produced. A trip report from 1966, documented by the South Wales Caving Club Newsletter, describes the main shaft as being choked at a depth of 80 feet. However, with assistance from Dr Nobel’s Linctus, a side passage was enlarged, leading to an extensive series of mine workings. During exploration, a blocked shaft was discovered, which, if opened up, could provide an easier access route into the mine.
