Several veins traverse the upper Newlands valley and the eastern slope of Dalehead. Among them, ‘St. Thomas’s Work’ and ‘Long Work’ were initiated by German miners during the Elizabethan era. Of particular interest to collectors is the composition of the orebody, which included malachite and chrysocolla along with chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and pyrite. Even in recent times, malachite has been easily discovered on the slopes below Dalehead, occasionally alongside brochantite. Reports also mention the presence of pyrrhotite. Castle Nook mine operated on a modest scale, exploiting two lead veins.
