Wheal Union Mine, located on the western outskirts of Redruth, opposite the old Grammar school, is believed to have amalgamated several former mines including Gweal Paul, Wheal Goodspeed, Hoskings Wheal Silver, and Wheal Captain.

Wheal Union itself commenced operations around 1848 but produced little and closed in 1854. The mine worked on various lodes including Druid’s, MacDonald’s, Vigur’s, Old North, Teague’s, Chyandower, and Wheel Breeches Lodes, with at least seven shafts on the sett. Despite reopening in the following year, the mine struggled due to production costs outweighing output and eventually ceased operations in 1866.

In 1864, George Lightley served as the Purser, Captain Thomas Glanville as the Manager, and the land was owned by James Wentworth Buller Esq., William Williams Esq., and Thomas James Agar-Robartes of Lanhydrock. There are scant records for Wheal Union in 1870 and between 1879 and 1882, but it was never considered a successful mine.
