The mining activities on the Slitt Vein and its associated flats in the Great Limestone are well-documented in Dunham’s work. The Rigg Opencut workings, located at the given grid reference, were primarily focused on extracting ironstone from flats within the Great Limestone.
Access to lower horizons on the vein was facilitated through Siders Level (grid reference: NY91693866), while fluorspar extraction occurred from a loop or branch of the main vein situated to the north of the opencut. This was made possible by a crosscut level (grid reference: NY91563900).
Gowland’s Shaft (grid reference: NY91663899) served as a point of operation for mining small quantities of fluorspar from reserves located to the east of the main vein.
In 1974, EXSUD Ltd conducted drilling operations, employing seven inclined boreholes in the area. These boreholes were instrumental in determining the geometry of the vein in this region, while also providing valuable insights into the presence and structure of the Whin Sill at various horizons.
