Shaft at SW 918 528. Adit. An iron mine situated southeast of Great Hewas farm operated intermittently from 1835 to 1875. The mine exploited two northwest-trending lodes composed of brecciated quartz cemented by limonite. These were worked through shallow shafts and opencast excavations. Although the shafts have been filled in and are now mostly obscured, surface traces of the excavations remain identifiable. One of the small remaining burrows of these gunnises is marked by the provided grid reference. Over the periods of 1860-1862 and 1872-1875, the mine yielded 7,600 tons of iron ore.
