The two principal lodes at the mine were repeatedly attempted without much success, with various companies undertaking adit and shaft work over the years. In 1853, operations began under the name Arundell Mine, and despite initial progress with the construction of an engine house, work halted in 1855 due to financial issues. Resuming in 1856 as the Arundell Copper Mining Company, this phase was short-lived, as by 1860, the mine was renamed Devon New Copper Mine after being operated briefly as the Druid Mine. However, financial difficulties plagued the venture once again, leading to suspension in 1860 and subsequent liquidation in 1863 after significant expenditures yielded no ore sales.
In 1866, the Druid Mining Company acquired the mine and invested £6500 in developing its shallower sections above the 68 fathom level over the next few years. Despite this effort, by 1869, the total expenditure on the mine since 1854 amounted to an estimated £35000 with no returns. In an attempt to revitalize the mine, the New Victoria (South Devon) Mine was established in 1869, acquiring a new engine capable of pumping the deeper levels. However, the venture faltered, and by 1870, the mine shares were no longer listed in the Mining Journal.
Although categorized as a copper mine, records indicate no significant copper output throughout its operational history. Dines (1956) observed highly pyritous veinstone and some mispickel (arsenopyrite) in the dumps, but occurrences of copper sulphides were rare.
