Based on speculation that the Shaley Vein might extend as the Eastern continuation of the Coalpithole Rake, a 3-meter-wide decline was sunk to a length of 500 meters. However, it was discovered that the ‘Old Man’ had penetrated deeper into the hillside than anticipated, and the best ore had already been mined. The mine’s adit also intersected with Side Mine. Small quantities of lead and zinc were produced before the mine closed in 1959.
