Tin mine situated on Mylor Downs, southeast of Carclew, has a history dating back to the early 19th century. A map created by Richard Thomas in 1808, preserved by the Cornwall Record Office, illustrates seven mining shafts in the region between Carclew road and a nearby valley to the south where the mine’s entrance was situated. Though some of these shafts were identified by Hamilton Jenkin in 1973, extensive development in the area has since obscured much of the original mining landscape. The grid reference provided marks the approximate location of the main engine shaft, as identified by Hamilton Jenkin.
