The Yorkley and High Delf coal seams rise from the deep geological basin to outcrop in the Bixslade area and near Coleford, making the slade an ideal location for accessing both. In particular, the High Delf seam—measuring an impressive seven feet in thickness—was heavily worked during the 19th century via the Bixslade High and Low Levels.
