Wheal Devonshire operated as a tin mine at the base of the St. Agnes granite mass. The shallow workings penetrated decomposing granite, which at the surface, was utilized as a clay work, providing candle clay to nearby mines. Even as late as 1908, South Crofty was purchasing clay from The St. Agnes Candle Clay Works.
