Pillar and stall worked entrances aren’t gated but since the late 1990s owned by Sussex Wildlife Trust who do not allow access except for academic research. Several species of bat use the mine as a roost.
Early 20th century sandstone quarry. Output was moulding sand used by the midlands iron industry. Some output went to local brickmaking. After quarrying ended the ‘caves’ were used to farm mushrooms.
