The winding drum still remains at the base of the quarry. The coal level entrance location is visible but has run in. The air shaft in the quarry is blocked and has a fence around it, also a small pulley on a length of metal remains hanging over the shaft.

The quarry was opened in the 1840s to provide Pennant Sandstone for the construction of Buildings in the local area. It was served by an incline down to the Ironworks at Blaenavon directly through where Big Pit is now located.

After the quarry closed a Coal level was driven just below it with an Airshaft located in the quarry itself.

There is a footpath marked on the OS map from Big Pit - there is a drainage channel you have to cross which is usually full of water!
