Worked with Wheal Tamar. Located in the heart of Gunnislake village, was renowned for the variety of minerals it contained. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the site was cleared and developed for construction. An adit level was driven from the river bank, initially heading slightly north of due west into the killas, following evidence of a copper lode, which is clearly visible in site photos. However, copper mineralization ceased well before reaching the granite-killas boundary, and further excavation into the granite proved unproductive.
Approximately 20 yards from the boundary, the adit sharply turns almost due north, marking the reappearance of the main lode, which had been previously exploited to the west. Initially following the contact between granite and killas, the lode eventually drives into the granite. Along the original adit drive, a second mineral vein is encountered about 10 yards into the granite, but exploitation of this vein has been limited.
Moving westward along the main drive, mineralization quickly diminishes before the lode reappears, slightly shifted to the north. In this area, the lode is rich in copper and contains dark purple fluorite with lenses of arsenopyrite. Wolframite is also present as blades up to 2 inches long within quartz pegmatites.
Stoping occurs at the far end of the drive where the lode is most extensive. Additionally, a short brick tunnel, blocked at the far end, provided access to one of the two shafts reaching this level. At this point, there is also a flooded winze leading to a lower level.
The adit exhibits significant radioactivity, with counts rising to about 100 per second within 50 yards of the portal and remaining consistently high throughout the works, except in the barren ground on the main drive to the west, where counts exceeding 200 per second prevail. However, no localizations of radioactive sources were detected throughout the workings.
